INFORMATION FOR THE HARDENED SKEPTIC
Before you got to this web site, some of you thought this airport had five destinations and "outrageously" priced fares across the board. Respectfully, you were wrong on both points.
We had five destinations in 1992. Today we have 12 destinations and a low cost airline.
Some of you are thinking: it’s still cheaper to fly from the airports in Kansas City, Tulsa and St. Louis. You’re right, SOMETIMES it is. But don’t base your assumptions about our airport on impressions that are five, ten or 15 years out of date. Don’t rely on a one time price snapshot.
How can you get cheaper prices? First of all, let’s start with an ugly fact: if you buy a ticket one or two days out, you’ll pay a premium. Business travelers typically fall in to this trap because they often fly with little notice.
So, the number one rule for finding low fares from Springfield is PLAN AHEAD. On August 7, 2007 we did the following fare analysis for:
round-trip fare between Springfield-Branson and Atlanta:
- Purchased ticket less than a day ahead, return in three days: $1218
- Purchased one day ahead, return in three days: $887
- Purchased one day ahead, return in seven days: $842
- Purchased 21 days ahead, return in seven days: $267
- Purchased 42 days ahead, return in seven days: $267
Round-trip fare between Kansas City and Atlanta:
- Purchased ticket less than a day ahead, return in three days: $502
- Purchased one day ahead, return in three days: $504
- Purchased one day ahead, return in seven days: $430
- Purchased 21 days ahead,, return in seven days: $178
- Purchased 42 days ahead, return in seven days: $118
Notice the price difference in the 21 day advance purchase: $89. We dare say most of you will spend nearly that much driving to Kansas City—the cost of gas, the cost of parking, the cost of meals, maybe the cost of a hotel. What’s your time worth?
If you do the same analysis for a trip to Detroit, the difference in cost is $38. Driving to Kansas City will easily cost that much.
So, do your research. Think ahead. Sometimes the price difference is so great, it only makes sense to fly from another airport—especially if you’re buying tickets for a family. But if it’s just one person flying, do your research and consider how much you’re really saving when you drive to another airport. |
